As soon as he heard the shower water running, Rory shifted the framed photo of Navy's parents on the desk to make room for his computer. Navy resembled both his parents, but mostly his father. Once he'd plugged in the computer, he saw the outside videos were all working and, as they had during the day, indicated nothing suspicious. He made his first rounds to check the security connections on the windows and doors. They were secure.

Like Navy, he lived alone, too, and had thought he preferred it. Now the sound of water made him think he liked having someone else around. Correction...he liked having this man in his personal space.

As he toured the house, Rory noticed the SEAL's neatness. In too many ways it mirrored his home. Everything had its place and was in it. Even the towels in the bath always hung from the racks in perfect order with their corners "kissing" per shipboard requirements.

Tonight, Rory took time to really look at his office. The shelves were lined with every volume of the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, and biographies of courageous sailors of history, such as the Viking Leif Erickson and Italian Christopher Columbus.

A couple of biographies of Captain John Paul Jones, an officer in the Continental Army who raised the Continental ensign on the flagship of the Navy's first fleet were there. Despite being a graduate of the Army's West Point Military Academy, Rory happened to know Jones was credited with establishing the traditions of courage and professionalism followed by sailors today.

The walls held Bond's framed degree from the Naval Academy, photos with his teammates at backyard barbecues, in pubs, aboard ships, at weddings and funerals. Either only their backs showed or their faces were blocked out. There was an official shot of his team dressed in full kit for a night op; only their eyes showed through their black ski masks.

After SEAL Team Six expert marksmen fired the shots that freed the Maersk merchant captain taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009, rumor had convinced Rory that Bond had been one of them. He wondered if this official photo was a shot of the men that night. If so, he thought he could make out Navy's build and stance despite the uniform and gear.

Paintings of historical ships, including a lithograph of the CNS. Alfred, the first flagship to fly the Grand Union Flag of the United Colonies, joined the other photos.

Despite forced into keeping his homosexuality a secret for twenty years and so wreaking havoc on his sex life, the memorabilia spoke to what a naval career had meant to him. It had paid for his medical degree for one thing and, because of hazardous duty pay, had earned him a decent living and excellent retirement income at forty.

Rory stepped closer to read a framed copy of something hanging on the wall behind the desk.
